March 30, 1942 ~ July 2, 2015 (age 73) 73 Years OldDon Schafer, 73, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Thursday evening, July 2, 2015, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Gerald Don Schafer was born March 30, 1942, in Davenport to Gerald and Margaret (Ringold) Schafer. He graduated in 1960 from Davenport High School. On August 14, 1976, Don was united in marriage to Minnie Hurley in Rock Island, Illinois. Don was employed for 25 years by the State of Iowa Department of Transportation until retirement in 2002.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards with his buddies. Don was an avid Hawkeye, Cubs, Bears and NASCAR fan.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 39 years, Minnie; a daughter, Natasha Schafer of Dubuque, Iowa; grandchildren, Austin Kennedy, Nicholas Kennedy and Christina Worrell; a step-son, John Fitch of Texas; step-grandchildren, Brittany Fitch and John Fitch, Jr.; a step-great-granddaughter, Sofia Gonzales.
Preceding Don in death were his parents and grandparents.
The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. There will be no service.
