Jean Burke

Mrs. Jean Burke, 89, of Charlotte, Iowa, died Sunday evening, June 26, 2016 in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

The former Mary Jeanette "Jean" Britt was born March 24, 1927 in Davenport to William and Madeline (Gillooly) Britt and was a 1945 graduate of Welton High School.  She worked at Iowa Mutual Insurance, DeWitt for several years prior to her marriage.  Jean married George Burke, August 19, 1950, at St. Anne Catholic Church, Welton.  The couple farmed and raised their family at rural Charlotte.  George preceded Jean in death, February 16, 2000.

She was a longtime and very active member of her beloved Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Petersville.  She belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society, taught religious education classes, and worked tirelessly on the annual church social.  Jean was also a 4-H leader and was a passionate member of the Democratic Party, working for many years on the Clinton County Election Board.  She loved spending time with her family, playing cards,   bird watching, gardening, swim classes and being outdoors.  

Surviving are children, Mary Anne (Robert) Braden of Eldridge, Don (Brenda Byers) Burke of Charlotte, Madonna (Lawrence, Jr.) Thines of Preston and George, Jr. (Angie) Burke of Janesville, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Scott (Christine) Braden, Jennifer (fiancé, Brooks Newton) Braden, Mike Braden, Jessica (fiancé, Tommy Clifford) Burke, Kyle (Renee) Burke, Laura (Landon) Driscoll, Adam Thines, Jeremy (fiancée, Amanda Koopmann) Burke, Jordan (Dani Deutmeyer) Burke, Jacob Burke, Jarrett Burke and Ashley (Andrew) Jungen; great-grandchildren, Ava Braden, Kyson Burke, Jerick Thines, Knox Driscoll, Evie Burke and the children and grandchildren of Brenda Byers; sisters, Patsy Ernster of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Betty Lou (Don) Yellman of Great Falls, Virginia; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Preceding Jean in death in addition to her husband were her parents and several brothers-in-law.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 30th, with a Rosary at 6:45 p.m. led by Sister Donna Burke, OSF.  The Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1st, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Petersville.  The Rev. Scott Lemaster and Deacon Mike Sheil will preside with burial to follow in the church cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to Genesis Hospice or the charity of your choice.

Grandsons, Scott Braden, Mike Braden, Kyle Burke, Adam Thines, Jeremy Burke, Jordan Burke, Jacob Burke and Jarrett Burke  will serve as pallbearers.  Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters, Jennifer Braden, Jessica Burke and Laura Driscoll.
