Dr. Rozella May Schlotfeldt

Dr. Rozella M. Schlotfeldt, 91, Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of DeWitt, Iowa, died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Judson Manor, Cleveland.

Rozella May Schlotfeldt was born Monday, June 29, 1914 in DeWitt, Iowa, the daughter of John and Clara (Doering) Schlotfeldt. She graduated from DeWitt Schools in 1931. Rozella went on to further her education at the University of Iowa from which she graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1935. She received her Master's Degree in Nursing Education/Administration in 1947 and a Ph.D. in Nursing Education--Curriculum Development in 1956 from the University of Chicago.

In 1939 Rozella started as an instructor at The University of Iowa School of Nursing. In 1945 she joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps where she rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following World War II, she returned to the University of Iowa for a short time, and then joined the University of Colorado School of Nursing where she worked as an Assistant Professor. In 1948 she became a Professor at Wayne University College of Nursing and was also Associate Dean there from 1957-60. She was also Professor and Dean at Case Western Reserve University and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. In addition, she was a Visiting Professor in the various nursing programs at Indiana University, University of Texas-Austin, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of San Diego, Rutgers University and University of Pennsylvania. She also was a Consultant for various university nursing programs throughout the 50 United States. Rozella was named Professor and Dean Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University in 1982.

Dr. Schlotfeldt was a member of various professional organizations. She received numerous awards and honorary degrees, and published and presented a multitude of articles and papers during her career. She was listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Women and Who's Who in American College and University Administration.

She loved traveling and the Arts, especially plays and the symphony.

Surviving are a nephew, Ray Stahl and his wife, Joy, Port Angeles, Washington and a special friend, Ruth Bohrer, Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy L. Stahl.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2005 at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness presiding. Family and friends may visit from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.
