William "Bill" McGarry Obituary

William “Bill” McGarry, 80, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Fountain Hills, Arizona, with loved ones by his side. Born on May 12, 1944, to Charlie and Mary (Mulholland) McGarry, Bill grew up on a farm south of DeWitt, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for hard work and devotion to his family.

Memorial Mass will be held June 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with Visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

On July 24, 1965, Bill married the love of his life, Barbara McGarry, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Milan, Illinois. They were blessed with five children and 11 grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of Bill’s life.

Bill was a man of many talents and wore several hats throughout his life. He worked at Caterpillar and later constructed houses with Country Home Builders. He also owned and managed hair salons in Davenport and Cedar Rapids, pursued his passion for farming, and worked as a real estate agent.

Known for his quick wit and sense of humor, Bill could brighten any room with his jokes. He brought laughter and joy to those around him, especially with his friends and loved ones.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barbara McGarry of Fountain Hills, Arizona; his children, Mike (Georgia) McGarry, Mark (Young) McGarry, Matt (Julie) McGarry, Maria McGarry, and Marty (Tracy) McGarry; and his 11 grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings, Bonnie (George) Howes of DeWitt, Bob (Jane) McGarry, and Tom (Donna) McGarry.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mary McGarry.
