Verna Smith, 94, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Friday, July 5, 2024, in Davenport, Iowa.
Verna Margo Wangelin was born September 25, 1929, in Milan, Illinois, to Roy and Sophie (Zietler) Wangelin. She graduated from Reynolds Community High School in 1948. Verna was married to Harold “Bob” Hazen from 1954 until his passing in 1964. Verna was united in marriage to Albert Smith on February 22, 1970, at the Calamus Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on February 6, 2012.
Verna was employed at J.I. Case Company in Bettendorf, F&B Telephone in Wheatland, and later at VanDenBerghe Motors in Calamus. She also served as Calamus city clerk for several years.
She enjoyed computer scrabble, working all types of puzzles, piecing quilts, and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving is her sister, Edna Benz of Reynolds, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Anna Mae Byers, and brothers, Eugene, Lyle, and Clifford.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at DeWitt United Methodist Church with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to charity of choice.
