Verlyn Scheckel, 86, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday, January 26, 2024, in his home, surrounded by his family.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 1, 2024, in the church, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Burial following in the church cemetery.
Verlyn Ralph Scheckel was born May 7, 1937, in Springbrook, Iowa, to Wilfred and Margaret (Kilburg) Scheckel. He grew up in Welton. Verlyn served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1963. He was united in marriage to Joanne Lutgen on July 11, 1959, in Bettendorf. The couple resided in DeWitt, where they raised their family of 4. Verlyn worked for 30 years at ALCOA, retiring in 1994.
Verlyn was active in the DeWitt community, including the Police Reserves, City Council, Volunteer Fire Department, and was a founding board member of the DeWitt Area Veterans Memorial. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238. Verlyn was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed fishing.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Joanne; children, Michael (Cindy) Scheckel of Silvis, Illinois, Diana (Brian Atlee) Biskup of Milwaukee, WI, Steven “Goob” (Debbie Clark) Scheckel of DeWitt, and Barbara Scheckel of DeWitt; grandchildren, Kate (Morgan) Umphres, Jessica (Marcus) Gillmor, Bridget (Mitchell) Manning, and Madeline (fiancé Matt Collins) Biskup; great-grandsons, Wyatt Manning and Owen Gillmor; twin brother Merwyn (Carleen Sievertsen) Scheckel; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Charles (Janet) Scheckel, Joyce (Bill) Bauer, and Carol (Verlyn) Steines, sister-in-law, Joyce Scheckel, and in-laws, Barbara (Richard) Ryan.
