Theresa Hansen Obituary

Theresa Hansen, 97, of DeWitt passed away on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Wheatland Manor.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Thursday, October 16, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m. in the church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt.

Theresa Hansen was born on September 30, 1928, in Sugar Creek, Iowa, on the family farm to Peter and Katherina (Banowetz) Reuter. She attended the parochial school at Sugar Creek for eight years. Theresa married Thomas Hansen on June 4, 1947, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sugar Creek. He passed away March 23, 2004,

She and her husband farmed near Charlotte, Iowa until 1962, then moved to their newly built home on 14th Street in DeWitt, Iowa. Mrs. Hansen worked for McDonald's Dry Cleaning for 4 years.  Then she started her own sewing business in her home. After retirement, she enjoyed making quilts, and made dresses to send to Haiti. She moved to United Manor senior housing in 2011, and then to Maggie’s House in 2024.

Theresa was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt, the Altar and Rosary Society, St. Joseph's Guild, and a funeral coordinator for the Parish. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister for the church and their shut-ins in the past years.

Survivors include her daughter, Mona (Carl) Clapp of Camanche, and daughter-in-law, Bonnie Hansen of DeWitt; 3 grandchildren, Tom Clapp, Bill Clapp, and Sarah (Mike) Dirks; 5 great-grandchildren, Allyson and Rylan Heister, Dakota and Michael Dirks, and Vannessa Clapp; a foster son, Charles (Chelsea) Geske of California; a brother, Richard Reuter of Calamus, and sister-in-law, Naomi Reuter of Clinton; sisters, Catherine Kilburg of Preston, and Joan (Gene) Gerardy of Bellevue; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters Elizabeth (Ben) Frett, Laurentia (Ben) Roling, Dorothy (Ambrose) Roling, and Mary (Albert) Kilburg: brothers Benedict (Rita), Vernard, Michael (Edna), and Julius (Mary) Reuter, and a brother and sister in infancy, Wilfred and Bertha, her son, Timothy Hansen and foster son, Stanley Opala, a brother-in-law, Earl Kilburg, and sister-in-law, Peggy Reuter.
