Shirley Claeys, 91, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, following a brief illness.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Prayer Service will follow at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Private Committal will be held at Elmwood Cemetery.
Shirley Mae Cleveland was born May 22, 1932, to Homer and Malinda (Schrum) Cleveland near the Clinton 6 Mile. After attending a country schoolhouse, she graduated from DeWitt High School in 1950. She married Francis Claeys on September 27, 1952. The couple resided in Clinton County, where they farmed and worked before settling in Welton for 32 years. Shirley was a homemaker and after raising 8 children, she worked at the DeWitt Referral Center. Francis preceded her in death in 2003.
Shirley was previously a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Welton, and volunteered in the Girl Scouts, 4-H, and Iowa Community Betterment. She enjoyed crafting, playing cards, and watching the Cubs win. Her truest joy was Sunday morning at Grandma’s, which she hosted for over 40 years.
Surviving are her children Curtis (Diane) Claeys of Bliedorn, Denise (Pat) Feldpausch of DeWitt, Todd Claeys of Welton, Marlaina (Jim) Recknagel of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Colette (Chad) Christensen of Calamus, Corrin (Geoff) Blandin of DeWitt, Jay (Leora) Claeys of DeWitt, and daughter-in-law, Jo Ellen Claeys of DeWitt; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and twins on the way.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Kevin, and her brother, Virgil Cleveland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The DeWitt Referral Center.
