Shirley Bartholomew Obituary

Shirley Maxine (Rhodes) Bartholomew, 95, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday, August 8, 2022, at the Iowa Veterans Home, in Marshalltown.

A graveside service and burial will be held at the Conrad Cemetery, Conrad, Iowa, on Monday, August 15, 2022 at 12:00 noon. A reception luncheon at the United Methodist Church, Conrad, will follow the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Lee, Jesse and Reid Bartholomew, and Jesús Torres.

Mrs. Bartholomew was born October 29, 1926, in New Providence, Iowa, to Cecil Rhodes and Elvina (Bakka) Rhodes. She graduated from Roland High School in Story, Iowa, in 1945, after which she was employed by the Ford Hopkins Company in Marshalltown.

Shortly after the end of WWII, she met returning serviceman Ernest Bartholomew, whom she married on December 28, 1946. In 1949 the couple moved to DeWitt, where they remained.

She was active in the United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, and bridge clubs. She loved music, and loved to sing and to play the organ. Ernest preceded her in death on December 13, 2008.

Surviving, are her sons, Dean (Elizabeth) of Cedar Falls, and Redge (Ellen) of Chaska, Mn; four grandchildren, Lee, Jesse, Emily, and Reid; and three great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Ezra, and Asher.
