Samuel Behan Obituary

Samuel Dillon Behan, 37, of DeWitt, Iowa, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 7, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Samuel was born November 30, 1986 to Joseph Patrick and Mary Frances (Nichols) Behan in Davenport, Iowa. He was raised in rural Grand Mound, and graduated from Calamus-Wheatland High School in 2005. Sam worked at Kellams & Bertsch Heating and Air in Maquoketa and then for Hafner Brothers Construction, DeWitt.

Whether at work or at home, Samuel was conscientious with the task at hand. Sam was extremely considerate of others, and people felt comfortable enough to ask for his help in nearly any circumstance. Sam had many projects and interests, which he deeply researched and thoroughly analyzed before fastidiously following through.

Sam was a true Renaissance man whose interests and activities included rock climbing, designing and building furniture, metal sculpting, gardening, roughing it in the wilderness, and inventing, engineering, and building the most complicated things he could come up with. Everyone knew him for his kindness, wit, helpfulness, and extensive skills in mechanics, metalworking, woodworking, building, and engineering.

Samuel was a much-loved member of the Clinton, Iowa Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He helped with many Kingdom Hall building projects as a volunteer. Despite being a man of few words, Samuel has a deeply permanent place in the hearts of his multitudes of friends, many who felt so close they described him as literally being their brother, the foremost being Ryan and Lisa Wilsey.

Surviving family include Samuel’s parents, Joseph Patrick and Mary Frances Behan; sisters, Jessica (Dave) Wilson, Catherine (Laif) Swanson, and Rebecca Behan; maternal grandmother, Patricia Nichols; and Olivia Heier, the love of his life, who he was looking forward to marrying; also, many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A Memorial Talk will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Clinton, Iowa.
