Russell Paulsen Obituary

Russell Paulsen, 72, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 14, 2024, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Russell Alan Paulsen was born September 1, 1951, to Robert and Gwendolyn (Kenney) Paulsen, in Clinton, Iowa. He graduated from Central Community Schools in DeWitt in 1969. Russ worked for Caterpillar at Mt. Joy until it closed, and then went into farming and seed corn harvesting. He married Mary Batey in 1979. The couple resided on the family farm in rural DeWitt. After retiring in 2019, they moved to DeWitt in 2023.

Russ enjoyed many years of dirt track stock car racing, where he won several first place trophies.  He was a private pilot for several years and helped to set up the first Q. C. Airshow in Mt. Joy.  He also enjoyed fishing on the Mississippi with his family in their pontoon boat. Russ was a genius in the shop:  fixing farm equipment, helping others fix cars or machines, sometimes very creatively, and teaching people how to use the tools and equipment he readily shared with others.  He invented a part for combines to separate corn from chaff that was distributed worldwide. Russ loved animals and continued feeding the farm cats every morning for many years. He loved traveling to Europe, and especially Mexico, having margaritas on the beach. Russ had a great sense of humor. He loved a good joke, and always had a quick one-liner that made everyone laugh. In 2010, Russ was able to donate the lifesaving gift of one of his kidneys to his wife, Mary.

Surviving are his loving wife, Mary; children, Michael (Tammy) Ricklefs of Davenport, and Tavia (Edgar) Vital of DeWitt; grandchildren, Ixaya, and Caiden, Cameron, Christopher, Chase, Colton, and Chloe, and Jeremy, Michaela, and Logan; a great-granddaughter, Ariah; siblings, Steven Paulsen of Davenport, and Bill (Nancy) Paulsen of Pueblo West, Colorado; nieces and nephews; a bonus son, Gary Paulsen; and his fur babies, Chica and Bella.

He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Joseph Paulsen, and his parents, Robert (Marilyn) Paulsen, and Gwendolyn (Jerry) Donahue.

A private family service will be held. Russ will be laid to rest on the family cemetery.
