Richard Dale “Dick” Johnson, 92, of Calamus, Iowa, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his four children, November 4, 2023.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2023, in the church, Pastor Leah Holloway-Nilson officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Calamus.
Dick was born July 9, 1931, to Henry N. and Lucille M. (Ineichen) Johnson. He grew up on the family farm near Toronto, Iowa, and attended a one room schoolhouse. In 1937, the family moved to Calamus, where he graduated from high school in 1949. He then attended Coe College until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from 1951 to 1953. He married the love of his life, Delores J. Mueller on May 19, 1951, a union that lasted for 63 and a half years, until Delores’ passing on January 4, 2015. Dick ran a grocery store in Calamus, then worked for the railroad, in construction, for Firestone, and lastly for G.E. for 28 years.
Dick was a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W. and was a charter member of Wapsi Oaks Country Club. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and trapping in his early years, and in later years golfing, camping, playing cards, and enjoying a cold beer! He was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus.
Surviving are his children, Vickie (David) Thomas of DeWitt, Kristie Carber of Chenoa, Illinois, Brad (Betty) Johnson of DeWitt, and Matt (Lisa) Johnson of DeWitt; grandchildren, Angela (Bryan) Herington, Jeremy Thomas, Tecia (Nathan) Mills, Samantha (Michael) Palen, Mitch Carber, Brandon (Erin) Johnson, Bethanee (Chris) Watts, Jacob Johnson and Nick (Eden) Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; and his special aunt, Betty Rupe.
Dick requested that everyone dress in casual clothing, no suits, just come in your favorite sports shirt.
