Richard Smith Obituary

Richard “Dick” Smith, 69, of DeWitt, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with family by his side, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

A Celebration of Life and luncheon will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Springbrook Country Club in DeWitt. Casual attire is welcome.

A private family committal with military rites will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Richard Lee Smith was born March 20, 1955, in DeWitt, Iowa, the 6th of 10 children born to J.L. and Evelyn (Blanche) Smith. He graduated from Central Community Schools in DeWitt, class of 1973, where he was active in sports. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Germany. Dick was a hard-working and industrious person with a career path marked by versatility and adaptability. Dick’s charming personality and “gift of gab” were endearing to everyone he met.

Dick’s favorite pastime was golf, and he was an exceptional player. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and watching any sports on TV.

He is survived by his sons, Adam (fiancée Nikki) and Matthew (Blanca), and their mother, Melissa all of Nashville, Tennessee; a grandson, Jaylen; siblings, Jim (Chris) of Akron, Ohio, Mary Ann Cowan of DeWitt, John (Jo) of Trempealeau, Wisconsin, Cathy (Steve) Bonnett of Cedar Rapids, Jeanne (Bruce) Koerber of Cedar Rapids, Betty (Brad) Johnson of DeWitt, Kay (Jess) Determan of DeWitt; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, David and Debra.
