Mr. Peter Karl Heinz Mangelsen, 89, of Charlotte, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, March 10, 2020.
Pete was born December 6, 1930, in Westerland on Sylt, Germany to Paul and Margarete (Grimm) Mangelsen. He immigrated to the United States in January of 1953 where he worked at Matthiesen Locker. Pete was drafted in 1954 in to the United States Army and became a United States Citizen. On December 21, 1957, he married Waltraud "Wally" Becker in DeWitt. The couple owned operated the Charlotte Locker for 35 years until retirement.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlotte. He greatly enjoyed caring for horses and farming.
Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Waltraud; sons and daughters-in-law, Jens and Deana Mangelsen of DeWitt and Chris and Karen Mangelsen of Charlotte; grandchildren, Christian (Tiffany) Mangelsen, Mollie (Jerad) Kilburg, Megan (Adam) Henke, Carsen Mangelsen, Bree Mangelsen and Leah Mangelsen; nine great-grandchildren, Gracyn and Drew Mangelsen, Caden, Brady, Chloe and Lyla Kilburg and Jocelyn, Maddox and Adalyn Henke; siblings, Renate Hellner, Paul Mangelsen, Werner Mangelsen, Gitte Dressen and Michael Mangelsen.
Preceding Peter in death were his parents and his son, Paul.
The family will greet relatives and friends at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Charlotte from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2020. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Anthony Dodgers officiating. Interment will be at Rossiter Cemetery, Charlotte with a luncheon to follow back at the church.
A Celebration of Pete's Life sharing memories will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2020, at the Millennium Ballroom, Goose Lake.
