Michael Hinrichs Obituary

Michael Gene Hinrichs, 74, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday morning, September 21, 2020, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Mike was born May 26, 1946, in Clinton to Harold and Marjorie (Hebdon) Hinrichs.  He was a 1964 graduate of Central Community High School.  Mike married Eleanor Johannsen June 12, 1965, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt.  They had one son, Christopher who married Dawn Tobin of Long Grove.  He was well known as a butcher at Matthiesen's Locker and Skeffington's Jack and Jill in DeWitt.  Mike also worked in Grand Mound at the grocery store and at the Grand Mound Locker for T.J. Weller.  He then eventually worked at the Oscar Mayer plant in Davenport where he retired in 2005 after 32 years of service.

He loved eating out at many of their favorite restaurants and sitting around a good campfire.  Mike enjoyed playing cards and playing tricks on his wife.  Although they had 55 great years together, the best ones were when they did country dancing at Fairyland.  There they made many great friends and numerous memories full of fun and laughter.  But Mike's greatest love, next to his wife was the Green Bay Packers.  He was a big fan since the early 1960's, hardly ever missing a game.  Mike's greatest thrill was when he was able to attend two games at Lambeau Field and then became a stockholder.

Surviving are his wife, Eleanor; his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Dawn Hinrichs of DeWitt; his sister, Diane (Bob) Wuestenberg of Johnstown, Colorado and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Bill Dies of DeWitt.  Although he had no grandchildren, his nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces meant the world to him.  They are Jeff and Erin Wuestenberg and their children, Hannah and Emma of Colorado, Greg and Danna Wuestenberg and their son Lucas of Davenport and Sarah and Jay Lewis and their son, Robbie of North Carolina.  Also, Jay and Heidi Dies and their son, Dylan of Camanche, Jena (Dies) and Nick Byorum and their sons, Hunter and Henry of LeClaire and Jared and Lea Ann Dies and their children, Brady and Brynlee of DeWitt.  Mike was so proud and happy to be a big part of their lives.

Preceding Mike in death were his parents, grandparents and in-laws as many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Private Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.  Mike's nephew, Greg Wuestenberg and a friend, Bob McGarry will officiate.  In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House or Dewitt Volunteer Fire Department.

A heartfelt thanks goes out to all the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for Mike since February.  Also to the wonderful staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for keeping Mike comfortable these last few days, especially one nurse in particular named, Matt.  And we cannot forget our loving family and dear friends who helped us out so very much.
