Mary Kay McManus Obituary

Mary Kay McManus, 74, of DeWitt, passed away peacefully early Friday, February 3, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 10, in the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Kay (Spain) McManus was born November 22, 1948, to Ronald and Mary (DeVine) Spain. She grew up on a farm in Petersville, the eldest of 8 children. She graduated from Northeast High School in Elvira. Mary Kay married Michael McManus on April 18, 1970, at Villa Nova Catholic Church. The couple resided in DeWitt, where they raised 6 children. Mary Kay was an insurance agent for over 35 years. Mike preceded her in death on June 1, 2009.

Mary Kay was active in both the DeWitt community and St. Joe's Catholic Church. She taught CCD and was instrumental in bringing Christian Experience Weekends (CEW) to the church. She also served as a member of the Altar & Rosary Society. She was involved in the Quad City Women’s Insurance Association. She participated in the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce activities, volunteered whenever asked, enjoyed playing cards, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes,  and spending time with her grandchildren, family, and friends.

Surviving are her children, Mike (fiancé Sarah McAleer) McManus, DeWitt, Tom McManus, DeWitt, Todd (Kelly) McManus, North Liberty, Mandy (Nate) Wells, Charlotte, Katie McManus, DeWitt; grandchildren, Amelia, Chase, Ty, Shea, Ireland, Ayden, Lilly, Gabe, Fisher, Emery, Scarlett, Killian, Evy, and Michael; siblings, Jo Ellen (Dave) Hanson, Barb (Tom) Skoff, Bob Spain, Bill (Chris) Spain, Perry (Julene) Spain, and brother-in-law, Dave Cook; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Gabe, siblings, Jim Spain and Helene Spain-Cook.
