Margaret “Margie” McDermott, 50, Delmar, Iowa, went home to Heaven for Christmas, Saturday evening, December 23, 2006 at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa

Margie was born Margaret Mary Thiel April 23, 1956 in DeWitt, Iowa, the daughter of Jim and Mary (Jackson) Thiel. She was a graduate of DeWitt High School, and received her teaching education from Mt. St. Claire, Clinton, and Marycrest College, Davenport. Margie married Raymond McDermott June 29, 1979 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. She spent most of her time as Kindergarten teacher, first in Lost Nation for 13 years and then at Delwood for 11 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, its altar society, the National Education Association and American Legion Auxiliary. She loved her family and their activities dearly, teaching and the students she taught. Even in her illness, Margie continued to do tutoring. She always said she had three “F’s”, Faith, Family and Friends. Margie wanted people not to be sad that she’s gone, but happy that she lived.

Surviving are her husband, Ray; a son and daughter-in-law, Luke and Shelly McDermott, Delmar; a daughter, Maura McDermott, a student at Iowa State University; her father, Jim Thiel, DeWitt; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bob and Jane Thiel, Delmar, and John Thiel, LeClaire; nieces and nephews, many of whom considered Margie as their second mom.

Preceding Margie in death was her mother, Mary Thiel.

The family will greet friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, from 3 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, 2006 with a vigil service at 8 p.m. Funeral Liturgy 11 a.m. Thursday, December 28, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Fr. Tom McDermott and The Rev. Fr. H. Robert Harness concelebrating. Burial in the Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be designated to St. Joseph Catholic Church and School or Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Pallbearers will be Mike Thiel, Chad Thiel, Jimmy Thiel, Jon Thiel, Mike Wing and Brad Randall.
