Margaret "Evie" Martin Obituary

Evie Martin, 78, formerly of Davenport, Iowa, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Margaret Evelyn Martin was born October 25, 1946, in Keokuk, Iowa, to Richard and Margaret (Schneider) Jones. Evie graduated from Alleman High School in 1965. She married Thomas R. Martin on June 1, 1974. They resided in Davenport, where Evie worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Davenport Police Department for over 20 years. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Tom preceded her in death in 2021.

Evie was immensely proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and cherished time spent with them. All of them remember her special “Pepsi floats” peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made on hamburger buns, and chocolate milk from a powdered mix. She also enjoyed reading, bowling, ceramics, and playing cards. Evie was an avid connoisseur of Diet Pepsi, and loved a smoke and a whiskey and Squirt.

Surviving are her children, Michael Martin of Durango, Colorado, Kim Wadsager of Davenport, Linnea (Ty) Thomas of Bettendorf, Loretta (Mike Schmidt) Stewart of Tipton, Elizabeth (Harley) Slacum of Baxter, and Stephen Halferty of Irving, Texas; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings, Rita (Jack) Herron, Julie (Sherman) Sweeney, David (Virginia) Jones, Kenneth Jones, Nancy (Joe) Casillas, and Gerianne (Craig) Benisch; sisters-in-law, Kathy Pettit, Theresa (Kyle) Olson, and Mary (Reed Williams) Blackwell, Patty Jones, and Antoinette Lefkowitz; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Dan, Mick, and Rick.

Following cremation, Evie will be laid to rest alongside her husband at the Rock Island National Cemetery. To join the family for the service, please meet at the Bettendorf VFW #9128 on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. A luncheon for friends and family will follow at the Bettendorf VFW. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
