Leo Fier, Jr., 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully early Sunday, September 4, 2022, in DeWitt.
Leo James Fier, Jr. was born August 24, 1939, to Leo and Clara (Holdgrafer) Fier in Davenport, Iowa. He grew up in the Sugar Creek area and Maquoketa. Leo graduated from St. Joseph High School in Bellevue, where he met the love of his life, Darlene Schulte. He continued on to barber school in Waterloo, and upon graduation, started his career in Davenport. Leo married Darlene on June 27, 1959, and the couple settled in DeWitt, where they raised 5 children and Leo established his barber shop. He retired after 61 years. Darlene preceded him in death on September 28, 2011.
Leo was a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America and an honorary Girl Scout, the Lions Club, and St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, listening to music, going for walks, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his children, Mark (Tina) of DeWitt, Mike (Judy) of Winterset, Julie (Mike) Flammang of Grand Mound, Marty of Charlotte, and Jodie Fier of Parkview; 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Berthel of Bellevue; sisters-in-law, Pearl Fier of Annapolis, Maryland and Gretchen Fier of Berkley, California; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Darlene, he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe (Eunice), Larry (Arlene), Robert, and Art, and a brother-in-law, Edward Berthel.
Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 12, 2022, in the church, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Interment will be at Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Sugar Creek.
