Leland Hurley, age 96, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in DeWitt.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 29, 2025, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, the Rev. John Dolde officiating. Interment and Military Rites will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt.
Leland Paul Hurley was born on June 18, 1929, in Welton, Iowa, to Lester George Hurley and Edna Anna Agusta Schwien Hurley. He was raised in eastern Iowa and spent his life marked by steady commitment to his work, his family, and his community.
On May 27, 1951, Leland was united in marriage to Melva Joan Anderson Hurley, who survives. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953, with an attachment to the Air Force in Korea. He proudly served his country until 1955.
Leland was a farmer and was deeply devoted to his career in education, serving as a teacher, principal, and curriculum director. Following his retirement, he continued working as a custodian until fully retiring, reflecting a lifelong work ethic and sense of responsibility. He also owned and managed numerous rental properties in DeWitt.
Survivors include his wife, Melva; daughters Karen (Albert) Taylor of Mesa, Arizona, Kim Hurley of DeWitt, and Krista (Archie) Kukarans of Virginia, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Carol Hurley; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Larry Allen Hurley; his parents; his brothers Larry Hurley and Llewllyen Hurley; and his sisters Beverly Dalmatow and Bernice Avila.
