Lawrence Curtis McCormick, 98, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center-East in Davenport.
Curtis was born April 14, 1924, to Thomas and Ann (Freund) McCormick in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946. He served on the U.S.S. St. Louis in the American Area, the Asiatic Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation. Curtis received the WWII Victory Medal and 7 Bronze Stars. Curtis married Elaine Reiling on July 6, 1951, in Wisconsin. The couple resided in Wisconsin, Toronto (Iowa), and California before settling in DeWitt in 1967. Curtis retired from Caterpillar in 1986.
Curtis was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bliedorn. He was a very active member of the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 in DeWitt and the V.F.W.
He could fix anything and could often be found tinkering with something. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children, Dennis (Lori) McCormick of New Prague, Minnesota, and Diane (Ron) Fletcher of DeWitt; grandchildren, Chris McCormick, Staci (Kip) Kelley, Nate (Kara) McCormick, Luke (Courtney) Fletcher, Donovan (Faith) Fletcher, and Bryant Fletcher; great-grandchildren, Hazyl, Izaya, Walker, Kaylee, Aubrey, Brody, and Clayton; a sister-in-law, Pat McCormick; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas “Mac” and John, and a sister, Pat.
Family will greet relatives and friends at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bliedorn, Tuesday, March 14, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. until the service time of 11:00 a.m. Interment and Military Rites will be at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the DeWitt American Legion.
