Larry O'Toole

Lawrence O'Toole, 87, of Grand Mound, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 28, 2024, in his home.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the service time of 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 2, 2024, at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound with Deacon Mike Sheil officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Grand Mound.

Lawrence Joseph O’Toole was born December 11, 1936, in Grand Mound, Iowa, to Wilford and Irene (Gilles) O’Toole. He graduated from Grand Mound High School, and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Larry married Rena Huddleston on April 18, 1958, in Waco, Texas. The couple resided in Grand Mound, where they raised five children. Larry worked as a car mechanic in the Grand Mound and DeWitt areas. Rena preceded him in death in 2019.

Larry was a soft-spoken, happy, and helpful person. He was known for doing work on the side for a case of beer. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He was proud of having served on guard duty with Elvis Presley during his time in the Army.

He is survived by daughters, Barbara (Jim) Gansemer of Sherrill, Brenda (Blaine) Moline of Davenport; sons, James of Grand Mound, and Gerald, A.F. Retired, of Angeles City, Philippines; grandchildren, Michael, Allan, Jason, and Laura; great-grandchildren, Navaeh, Jericho, Oliver, Asher, Evelyn Rose, Scarlet, Everett, and Ellie; a sister, Mary Evers, and sister-in-law, Red O’Toole; as well as nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Joseph, a brother, Michael, and sisters, Madonna, and Arlene.

Pallbearers will be Blaine Moline, Mike O’Toole, Allan Gansemer, Jason Gansemer, Jeff Weirup, and David O’Toole.
