Joseph Charles Watters

Joseph C. Watters, 71, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family, Wednesday, December 15, 2021.

Joe was born August 5, 1950, and grew up on the family farm in Petersville, Iowa, where he continued farming until the 1980’s. He was the 2nd of 9 children born to Joseph and Delores (Irwin) Watters. Being the only son, he was loved and spoiled by 8 sisters. He graduated from Northeast High School in Goose Lake in 1969. Joe served in the National Guard for 2 years. On April 8, 1972, he married Carol Lund, and would have celebrated 50 of marriage in 2022. They had 3 daughters, who also spoiled him.  Joe was an over-the-road truck driver for many years.

Joe enjoyed camping outings with his family and loved listening to rock n’ roll oldies but goodies. He enjoyed dreaming about his big plans for winning the lottery. Joe was a fan of fast cars, owning several Mustangs throughout his life. He was known for his sense of humor and storytelling. In his younger days, he was the drummer for the band Derm ‘O Watts.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; 2 daughters, Dana (Tom) Stodden of Clinton, and Brooke (Lee) Garrity of DeWitt; grandchildren, Guy, Alison, Eastin, Carlee, Owen, and Max; his mother, Delores Spain; sisters, Mary Therese (Dave) Roling, Joann Rehr, Mary Catherine (Dan) Schlader, Mary Ellen (Dave) Plambeck, Mary Jane (John) Vance, Mary Beth (Larry) Butt, Mary Lou (Brian) Finnicum, Mary Colleen (Larry) Bartels; step-siblings, Paul (Sandy) Spain, Larry Spain, Terry (Helen) Spain, Steve “Woody” (Paula) Spain, and Rita (Pat) Dunlavey; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Maggie.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Sager, his father, Joseph R. Watters, step-father, Paul Spain, step-siblings, Darrell Spain, Nancy Spain, and Ruth Spain, and a niece, Michelle Johnson.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 20, 2021, in the church, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Petersville.
