John "Jack" Maynard Obituary

John “Jack” Maynard, Sr., 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Sunday September 25, 2022, at his home following an extended illness.

John Richard Maynard was born August 28, 1933, to Hosea Joseph and Mildred Alta (Bourne) Maynard. He graduated from DeWitt High School in 1953. He was well decorated in sports, with 12 varsity letters in 4 years, numerous medals, and ribbons. Jack was named to the football honor squad as the best running back in the state of Iowa by Tate Cummins. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957, stationed in El Paso, Texas. On August 23, 1958, Jack married Donna Jean Rowson at the First Congregational Church in DeWitt. He worked for United Telephone Company (later Contel and GTE) for 42 years, retiring at the age of 57.

Jack was a loving husband, father and father-in-law, grandfather, and great-grandfather who greatly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was an extremely avid Chicago Bears fan. He also enjoyed camping, bowling (for over 60 years), dancing, and working with youth as a Cub Scout leader, coaching baseball for 22 years, and bowling for 5 years. For all children of all ages and all sports, he was the coach from the bleachers. He was especially gifted in woodworking. Jack was honored in both the Central DeWitt Hall of Fame and the DeWitt Bowling Hall of Fame.

Those honoring his memory include his wife of 64 years, Donna; son and daughter-in-law, John Jr. and Mandy of DeWitt; grandchildren, Whitney (Matt) Fleming, Wyatt (Chelsey) Knapper, Taylor (Tamika) Maynard, 6 great-grandchildren, Austin, Adrienne, Peyton, Zayla, Ivy, and Brooks; brothers, Harry (Carolyn) Maynard, Dennis (Linda) Maynard, sister-in-law, Kay Maynard; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bob Maynard, sisters, Edna Sager and Peggy Carber, and brothers-in-law, Lowell Carber and Gus Sager, a great-granddaughter Zayla Maynard, and a niece, Jane Schulz.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2022, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 30, 2022, in the funeral home, Kurt Sager officiating. Burial and Military Rites will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.

Pallbearers will be Whitney, Wyatt, Taylor and Tamika, and nephews, Cody Schulz, and Levi Levsen. Honorary pallbearers will be Chelsey, Austin, Adrienne, Payten, Zayla, Ivy, and Brooks.
