John Winterbottom, 85, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully with family at his side, Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.
John William Winterbottom was born March 12, 1937, in Morris, Illinois, the son of Abe and Alice (Smith) Winterbottom. He graduated from high school in Morris in 1955. John married Beverly Broderick on September 5, 1958.
In 1956, John began his career at Caterpillar Tractor Company as a security officer, a position that took the couple to many different locations in the first several years of their marriage. They settled in DeWitt in 1966. John retired from Caterpillar as Chief of Security in 1992.
John was a member of the United Methodist Church in DeWitt, and was a 50-year Mason. He was an expert woodworker, making furniture and countless other items for his family. He also enjoyed gardening and birdwatching. John was happiest spending time with his family.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife, Beverly; three children, Karen (Lee) Penningroth of DeWitt, Susan Green of Iowa City, and John (Stephanie) Winterbottom of Michigan; three grandchildren, Alyssa (Derek) Henscheid, Hailey (Ian) James, and Vincent Green; five great-grandchildren, Jenna, Emme, and Ollie Henscheid and Harper and Asher James; a brother, Kenneth (Denise) Winters; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gloria (Don) Benson; a brother, Billy Winterbottom; an infant sister, Mary Winterbottom; and an infant granddaughter, Hope Green.
