John Reed

John Reed, 67, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023, in a tragic farming accident, doing what he loved.

John Michael Reed was born October 12, 1955, to William and Joan (McDermott) Reed of DeWitt. He graduated in 1974 from Central Community Schools in DeWitt, and attended Mt. St. Clare College, in Clinton. John was united in marriage to Carol Franzen on February 10, 1979, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa. The couple resided in rural DeWitt, where they raised their family and John farmed.

John was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, the Knights of Columbus, and the CEW community. He also belonged to the Welton Volunteer Fire Department, and loved helping with the omelet breakfasts. He was a loving grandfather, attending his grandchildrens’ events at St. Joseph School. He always had a lending hand and was there when needed by family, friends, and neighbors. His huge smile was infectious, bringing so much joy to those all around him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 44 years, Carol; children, Nicole Schmidt of DeWitt, and Chris (Ashley) Reed of Delmar; grandchildren, Carissa and Holly Schmidt, and Griffin, Harper, and Owen Reed; siblings, Patrick (Linda), Kathleen (Pete) Picchi, Dotty Fischer, Joe, Leo, Joan (Ron) Wheeler, Julie Reed, Helen Robinson, Greg, Barbara (David) Bowstead, Jim (Gala), and Lisa Reed; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Mark and Tom; a nephew, Jeff Picchi; and a brother-in-law, Rex Robinson.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 26, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2023, in the church, with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
