Joan Martin, 87, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2025, in her home, following a brief illness.
Joan Pauline Swierczynski was born April 25, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan, and was raised by her mother and step-father, Josephine (Abram) and Charles Syer. She grew up in Michigan where she graduated from high school. She married Carl Sewejkis Sr. with whom she had 4 children. They later divorced. Joan and her children settled in DeWitt in 1975. Joan married John “Jack” Martin and they tolerated 44 years together. Joan worked as a cook at DeWitt Community Hospital, retiring after 26 years.
She found joy in the little things—cheering on her beloved Chicago Cubs, watching Caitlin Clark light up the court, cuddling up with her cherished puppies, and hanging with “The Five Fossils”. Nothing brought her more joy than spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids. Whether it was the excitement of a game or the laughter of loved ones by her side, those were the moments that filled her heart.
Surviving are her husband, Jack; children, Carl Sewejkis Jr., Connie Sewejkis Collum, and Terry Sewejkis, all of DeWitt, and Steven (Lisa) Sewejkis of Harbor Springs, Michigan; 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene (Gary) Patterson and Diane Lawrence; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Stanley Swierczynski, mother and stepfather, and siblings.
A Celebration of Life, with lite refreshments, will be held at 11:00 a.m. June 7, 2025 at Murphy's Pub in DeWitt.
Arrangements are in the care of Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Condolences may be expressed at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com
