Jo Connell Obituary

Jo Ann Connell 89, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully, Thursday, July 18, 2024, surrounded by loving family, at Fieldstone in DeWitt.

Visitation will be from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2024, in the church, with visitation one hour prior. The Rev. Fr. Robert McAleer will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery in Long Grove.

Jo was born Josephine Ann Green to Meryl and Josephine (Burke) Green on November 6, 1934, in Grand Mound, Iowa. She graduated from Calamus High School. Jo married Robert Connell on November 19, 1955, at Sts. Philip and James Catholic Church in Grand Mound. The couple resided in DeWitt, where they raised their son, Michael. Jo worked as a bookkeeper for Wendel Oil and Petersen-Hagge Furniture, retiring in 2004. Bob preceded her in death in 1996.

Jo was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt, where she served on the Altar and Rosary Society. Her biggest legacy is as an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes and DeWitt Sabers, attending all of her grandchildren and great nieces and nephews’ sporting events. She enjoyed spending summers on the river in Bellevue with family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Michael (Susan) Connell of DeWitt; grandchildren, Erin (Brandon) Poell of DeWitt, Bryan (Holly) Connell of Chatham, Illinois, and Dillon (Zoe) Connell of Hopkins, Minnesota; great-grandchildren, Kellan, Jaxson, and Hayden Poell, Claire and Chloe Connell, and Graham Connell; siblings, Lois Canaday, and Jerry (Mary Ann) Green; a sister-in-law, Theresa Eschbach; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen, siblings, John (Darlene), Tom (Betty), Marilyn (Larry), Meryl “Cubby,” Dennis, and bonus brother-in-law, Cletus “Ham.”
