Ivan Dale Van Ommeren

Ivan Van Ommeren, 87, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.

A Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024, at DeWitt Evangelical Free Church, from 9:00 a.m. until the service time of 11:00 a.m., with a lunch following at the church. In his kind and generous spirit, Van donated his body to science at the University of Iowa.

Ivan Dale Van Ommeren was born October 22, 1936, in Hull, Iowa, to Joe and Gertrude (Vermeer) Van Ommeren. He grew up in Northwest Iowa, and graduated from Orange City High School. He received his Bachelor’s and later Master’s degrees in Industrial Education from Iowa State University. He also served in the Army National Guard. Van married Dorothy De Boer on July 13, 1962, in Boyden, Iowa. He taught industrial arts in Omaha, Nebraska for two years before beginning his 27-year career with John Deere, working in several plants in the Waterloo, and Quad Cities areas. The couple resided in Hudson, Iowa, for several years where they raised 3 daughters. They settled in DeWitt in 2006.

Van was a member of the DeWitt Evangelical Free Church. He enjoyed attending his grandchildrens’ school and sporting events. Van and Dot enjoyed traveling together and went to many different states and countries.

He is survived by his wife Dot; daughters, Kelly (Duke) McDonald of Springfield, Missouri, Kay (Jed) Brokaw of DeWitt, and Karma (Doug) Hinkle of DeWitt; grandchildren, Abbi (Jacob) Roush, Zoey Brokaw (Alex Lutz), Jacob Brokaw, and Zach Hinkle; sister-in-law, Charlene Van Ommeren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his siblings, Annetta (George) Genant, Vernon (Marie) Van Ommeren, and Roger Van Ommeren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the DeWitt Evangelical Free Church.
