Harold Dean “Harry” Olson was born June 21, 1948, at the homestead in rural Grand Mound, the 9th of 11 children born to Nels and Alice (Grau) Olson. He grew up farming and playing baseball. Harry graduated from Calamus High School in 1966. He then received his B.A. in 1970 from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he and several of his brothers played baseball. As a pitcher at Luther, he received All American Honors. He then served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Harry was united in marriage to Jean Kroymann on Wednesday, July 21, 1976, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, rural Calamus. The couple resided in rural Grand Mound, where they raised their family of four daughters. Harry farmed with his brothers for several years. He also worked at Equistar in Camanche, he later worked for Irwin Inc. Pallets in DeWitt until retiring in June 2019. After retiring, he stayed busy helping at his son-in-law’s veterinary clinic and cattle operation.

Harry was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was a loving husband, and was dedicated to his family, attending sporting events and 4-H activities for his children and grandchildren regardless of what shift he had just finished at work. He loved taking his family to baseball games, and was especially fond of the New York Yankees. He was an avid golfer, and was a charter member of the Wapsi Oaks Country Club. Later in life, he enjoyed hosting pool parties out at the farm, and camping with friends and grandchildren. He was a friend to all who met him.
