Harleyn Vermazen

Harleyn Vermazen passed away peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2024 at The Fieldstone in De Witt.

Harleyn Christina (Cue) Vermazen was born on January 24, 1945 in West Union, Iowa to Harley and Dorothy (Doland) Cue.  She grew up in the Fayette, Iowa area, graduating from Fayette High School in 1963, where she was crowned Homecoming Queen and earned the Iowa State Bar Association’s Citizenship Award.  She also spent many hours working behind the soda fountain in the local drug store during her high school years and while attending Upper Iowa University.

She married her high school sweetheart, Stephen Vermazen in 1965.  To this union two children were born, Anthony James and Heidi Kristine.  Harleyn and her family moved to Van Horne, Iowa where Steve taught and coached football from 1966-68.  They then moved to De Witt where he taught and coached until his death in 1982.

Harleyn was a member of the United Methodist Church and served as the church secretary during the ministries of Reverends Potter and Pierce.  She was a long-time member of the Iowa Chapter of the National T.T.T. Society where she greatly enjoyed the friends she made and the good works they did.  She also helped with Girl Scout Brownies and Sunday School.

Despite suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis for over 40 years, Harleyn rarely complained and found joy in the simple things in life.  She enjoyed music, audio books, movies, “Days of Our Lives”, the Hawkeyes, her friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Steve in 1982 and daughter Heidi in 2002.  She is survived by her son Tony of De Witt, her sister Kathleyn (John) Manson of Maquoketa, sister-in-law Diane (Ben) Schnieder of Rocky Mount, MO, brother-in-law Peter (Maureen) Vermazen of Nyack, NY and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in De Witt.
