Gloria Couture Obituary

Gloria Jean Wagemester Couture, 67, was born to Leo & Genevieve (Borman) Wagemester, in DeWitt, on June 21, 1952. She walked through Heaven’s gates on May 14, 2020.

Gloria went to St. Joseph’s Catholic School, 1st-10th, and graduated from Central DeWitt High School in 1970. She graduated from Scott Community College as an LPN in 1971.

She was a talented LPN in her first career but truly outshined in her ultimate calling as a loving mother, devoted homemaker, and patient matriarch of her family. Her infectious laugh was a healing salve for all who heard it and her baked goods were made of equal parts unconditional love and legend.

Over the years she honed her craft, by collecting and perfecting several recipes lovingly from family and friends around the world. She really enjoyed sharing those recipes and instilled this love in her children – and her renowned dishes will continue to live on with her children as part of their “family recipes”.

Gloria was a confidant to all who knew her, nothing gave her more joy than to help others. She had another passion in her life and that was of animals, instilled by her “Iowa farmgirl roots”. She loved caring for pets and helping others with theirs, she always had a way to heal the sick or injured. Her true passion was horses and she felt free when she rode and tended them.

Gloria had an unwavering faith in God. Over the years, life moved her from Iowa to Canada to Wyoming and finally to North Carolina. No matter where life took her on her journey, she knew the Lord was by her side. Her faith and conviction brought her resolute peace as she made her heavenly trip.

Her strength, love, bravery, unselfishness and honesty, made her an innate shepherd to many and allowed her to befriend many more. She wore the mantle “Mom” proudly and tirelessly fulfilled this responsibility to many of her children’s friends. Without question, her inexhaustible love touched and enriched countless lives – and it is clear, in similar fashion, her sweet soul shall also live on in each of us.

Gloria is survived by her six children and spouses; Chad (Meg) Couture, Christian (Leigh) Couture, Nathalie (Jared) Graves, Mathieu (Sera) Couture, Chantal (Dan) Thompson and Luc (Jenny) Couture. She is also survived by 12 loving grandchildren, Chloe, Elle, Lily, Carter, Reed, Tatum, Sofia, Oliver & Hazel, Maia, Leo, Kalyani and by her former-husband and father to her children, Pierre Couture. Her sisters Lenora Frost, Madonna Gannon, Victoria Jaeger, and brother Leon (Deb) Wagemester; brother-in-law Jim Richmond and nieces & nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents Leo & Genevieve (Borman) Wagemester, her sister Geri (Olson) Richmond, and brothers-in-law Edwin (Bud) Frost, Jim Gannon, Nels Olson Jr., and Lyle Jaeger.
