Gary Carstensen

Gary Lee Carstensen, 75, passed away on June 15, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 10, 1950 to Robert and Esther (Paarmann) Carstensen.  

His true love story started on a warm summer night in June of 1968. While Janet Burkhalter was attending college. Gary stopped by to visit his sister, who lived in the same dorm. Some might say it was love at first sight. The following spring, on June 20, 1969, they were married and began a love story that would span nearly 57 years.

At the age of 18, Gary was drafted in the United States Marine Corps and honorably served his country.

Gary cherished time spent with his family above all else. Whether working the land, casting a fishing line, or gathering with those he loved most, he found happiness in life's simple blessings. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to the people he cared about. The lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the love he gave so freely will continue to live on through his family.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Janet; his children, Julie (Curt) Brockman, Jennifer Carstensen, Jeff (Mandy) Carstensen.

Gary was a proud grandfather to Devon Carstensen, Katelinn (Tyler) George, Isabel Eastman, Alexandar (Ashley) Hodge, Justin (Kadence) Hodge, Bailey Carstensen, and Brandon Carstensen. He was also blessed to be a great-grandfather to Basil, Naomi, Atlas, Arthur, and Nova, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride. He also left behind a brother and a sister, brother and sister-in-law, a brother-in-law, special nieces, and special nephew. Gary was also known as a very strong father figure to many, especially Joe Weinschenk, whom he loved as a son.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, sister-in-law and a niece.

Gary will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of love, faithfulness, and devotion to family will forever remain in their hearts.

Services will be held at a later date, yet to be determined. Memorials may be sent to the family at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt.
