Gail Leight, 89, of Long Grove, Iowa, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones on March 10, 2024, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Gail was born to Lars and Edna Dobak on September 11, 1934, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from Vocational High School in Minneapolis, where she enjoyed writing for the school newspaper. In 1965, she moved to the Quad Cities, where she met future husband, Nathan Leight, with whom she went on to have four children. She moved to DeWitt in 1986 and to Long Grove in 2006. In midlife, Gail worked for the radio station WLLR in Davenport and owned and operated a Diet Center in Maquoketa.
Gail was a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Davenport, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and bringing her children every Sunday. In recent years, she attended Emmaus Road Church in DeWitt. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the piano, reading mystery novels, cooking, spending time with loved ones, and watching movies with her grandchildren. She will be especially remembered for her limitless patience, kindheartedness, and empathy.
Gail is survived by her children, Chris Leight, Mark Leight, Deborah (Matt) Maher, and Susan (Steve) Clark; grandchildren, Amanda (Joby) Staley, Matthew (Ina) Birks, Lexi (JT) Vanderbilt, Wyatt, Asia, Audyn, Holden, and Paris; and great-grandchildren, Stella and Revi.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by Nathan.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt, with a time of sharing beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Private interment will take place at Pleasant Valley Cemetery at a later date.
