Freddie “Fred” Behr, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Fred was born August 23, 1935, in Clinton, Iowa to Fred and Frieda (Schroeder) Behr. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 until 1956. He married Eula May Bradley on November 20, 1955 in West Virginia. After being honorably discharged, the couple moved to DeWitt, where Fred worked for the City of DeWitt and Don Hamdorf Plumbing before starting B & H Sanitation in DeWitt, which he co-owned and operated for 26 years until retirement. Eula preceded him in death on March 31, 2009.
Fred served as a volunteer fireman in DeWitt for 26 years, and served on the DeWitt Park Board. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 in DeWitt.
Fred enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening, and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters and great-grandson.
Surviving are a son, Freddie and his wife, Vicki of Northfield, Minnesota; his granddaughters, Lauren (Patrick) Wadzinski of Northfield, and Kelli (Toby) Hoskins of Minneapolis; a great-grandson, Theodore “Teddy” Hoskins; a sister, Clara Schatz of Delmar, Iowa; and a brother-in-law, Jim Owen of DeWitt; nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Eula, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Wilma Owen and Carl Schatz.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2019, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 15, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial and military rites will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery in Clinton.
