Edward Grillot Obituary

Ed Grillot, 72, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness.

Edward Joseph Grillot was born July 6, 1949, to Forrest and Dorothy (Wehrman) Grillot in Piqua, Ohio. He graduated from high school in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and continued his education at Scott Community College. Ed enlisted into the U.S. Navy SeaBees, serving in Vietnam as a heavy-duty mechanic. He married Chris Murphy on June 21, 1975, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf. The couple resided in rural Wheatland where they raised their 3 sons. Ed worked as a maintenance welder at ALCOA until retiring in 2004. They later moved to DeWitt.

Ed was a proud Vietnam Veteran. He was a man of strong faith in God, and was a member of Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church in Grand Mound. He held lifetime memberships in the Iowa Trappers Association, National Trappers Association, and the N.R.A. He was also a member of Fur Takers of America, VVA 776, Veterans Car Club of the Quad Cities, and the Knights of Columbus Council 959.

Ed had an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior, trapping, and the outdoors. He was passionate about conservation and sharing his vast experience and skills with the next generation. Ed was a consummate “tinkerer”, and loved creating beauty out of junk.

Ed had a huge ornery streak evidenced by the unmistakable twinkle in his eye. He was a generous and caring person, the first to show up to help, and the last to leave. Ed was an avid collector of the unique, and had more than one of what you never knew you needed. He always listened more than he talked, but when he did speak, everyone listened. Ed was a real straight shooter, and there was never any question about where you stood with him.

He is survived by his wife, Chris; sons, Matt of DeWitt, Tim (Patti) of Wears Valley, Tennessee, Steve (Jennifer) of Maxwell; grandsons, Andrew, Louis, Charles, and Henry; siblings, Patricia Grillot, John (Kay) Grillot, and Teresa (Harry Jr.) Hixson; sisters-in-law, Peggy Jurkowski and Miseon Grillot; nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Jerry and Dan.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 10, 2022, at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church, Grand Mound, the Rev. James Vrba officiating. Burial and Military Rites will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Cemetery in DeWitt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quad Cities Veterans Outreach Center and Sts. Philip & James Catholic Church.
