Dr. Dan Roe Obituary

Dr. Dan A. Roe, 71, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday morning, December 14, 2020, at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Dan Alan Roe was born in Fairfield, Iowa, October 12, 1949, to Robert Edward Roe and Beatrice (Fleming) Roe. He attended grade school in Mt. Ayr, Iowa, until 6th grade when the family moved to San Jose, California, for a year. The family returned to Mt. Ayr where Dan completed junior high and high school. He was very athletic during his school years and participated in whatever sport was occurring, whether it be baseball, football, basketball or track. He won the high hurdles at the state track meet his senior year. After graduation from Mt. Ayr High School, Dan attended Northwest Missouri State University at Maryville, Missouri, where he continued to run track. At Northwest Dan got a B.S. degree in secondary education. 

On July 29, 1972, Dan married Marla Kay Euritt. Dan got a teaching job at East Union High School in Afton, Iowa, where he was to teach history and government and coach the girls softball team. However, Uncle Sam had other plans and Dan was drafted into the United States Army.  He served his country from 1972-1974. stationed at Huntsville, Alabama, working on nuclear warheads. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Dan returned to East Union High School where he taught for five years.  During the summers, Dan pursed his Master's degree at Northwest Missouri State.  Dan and Marla Kay moved to Union Star, Missouri, where Dan served as Superintendent.  At that time, he was the youngest Superintendent in the state of Missouri.  Dan continued to further his education by attending the University of Missouri at Columbia for a Specialist degree.  After a few years at Union Star, Dan took a position as Superintendent in Murray, Iowa. While in Murray, he earned a Doctorate degree from Drake University in Des Moines. Dan and Marla Kay welcomed a son, Michael Alan, on November 9, 1983.  Dan continued his career in education by holding additional Superintendent positions in Bloomfield, Iowa, Lebanon, Missouri, and Pittsburg, Kansas. In 1996, Dan accepted the Superintendent position in DeWitt where he remained until retirement in 2004. 

Dan was a long time member of SAI (School Administrators of Iowa) and received numerous state and national school administrator awards, including an award as a top 100 executive educator in the nation. Dan was active in the DeWitt Community. He attended the United Methodist Church and was a member of the DeWitt Noon Lions Club. Dan enjoyed attending Saber sporting events, woodworking, and was an avid golfer. He was especially proud of his son, Michael and loved spending time with his family particularly his three grandsons, Kaidan, Keagan, and Kolten.  

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marla Kay; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Danica Roe of DeWitt; grandsons, Kaidan, Keagan and Kolten; a brother, Steve (Nancy) Roe of Mt. Ayr; a sister, Brenda (Pat) Weeda of Tingley, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Dan in death were his parents.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2020.  A Graveside Service and military rites will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 2020, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr with Pastor Marty Burgus officiating.  Burial will follow.
