Dorothy Hasenmiller Obituary

Dorothy Jane Hasenmiller, 91, of Grand Mound, passed away on March 8, 2021, at Wheatland Manor in Wheatland after a lingering illness.

Dorothy was born on October 10, 1929, in Garryowen, Iowa, to Joe and Janet (Penney) Phillips, second of 10 children.  She graduated from Maquoketa High School.  She married Elmer Hasenmiller at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Maquoketa on May 9, 1953.  The couple lived their entire married life in the Grand Mound, Iowa area.

She held several positions throughout her life but what she excelled at and enjoyed most was being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a daycare provider for many of her grandchildren. She attended numerous athletic and musical events of her children and grandchildren including baseball, softball, football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, track, cross country, soccer, diving, gymnastics, vocal music, band, show choir, plays, and musicals. Dorothy was an accomplished seamstress and made many shirts, pants, Easter and prom dresses for her children.  If you needed an alteration, something mended or ironed, a costume made, help with homework, or something fixed, she was the person you turned to. Each of her grandchildren received a homemade Christmas stocking when they were born.

Dorothy’s brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews were a big part of her life.  She looked forward to family reunions, weddings and holidays to connect with them.

She was an active member of SS Philip and James Catholic Church in Grand Mound and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.  She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and several card clubs.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Diane (Al) Roderick of Cedar Rapids, Steve (Sue) Hasenmiller of DeWitt, Dwaine (Tee) Hasenmiller of Phoenix, Arizona, Lynne (Dave) Maher of Grand Mound, Lisa (Phil) Butt of Grand Mound, and daughter-in-law Carolyn (Bryce) Heathman of DeWitt; grandchildren Joel, Dan, Sara, and Allison Hasenmiller, Kathy Brooks, Matt and Chris Roderick, Blake Hasenmiller, Leanna Bender, Alaina, Lauren, and Maureen Hasenmiller, Brad Maher, Anne Adams, Alyssa Cram, and Bryan Maher, Scott Butt and step-granddaughter Leah Haley; 23 great-grandchildren and siblings Paul, Pauline and Pat.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years Elmer, son Jeff, and 6 brothers and sisters.
