Don Burmeister, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 noon in the funeral home, Pastor Chris Hartley officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Donald Ray Burmeister was born January 23, 1939, in rural DeWitt, Iowa, to August and Lucile (Anderson) Burmeister. He was employed with Pride Seed Corn (Northup King) for 24 years and Eagle Foods for 13 years. Don married Judy Habben August 28, 1976. He retired in 2001.
He enjoyed paddle boats and steam trains, taking excursions and chasing them when they came around locally. The highlight of his life was getting to touch the Big Boy Steam Engine.
He also loved taking his kids and grandkids to the Old Threshers Reunions in Mt. Pleasant, and family gatherings.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; children, Patty (Bob) Garien of Maquoketa, Kathy (John) Dunn of Preston, Janet (Gary) Paysen of Clinton, John Burmeister of DeWitt, and Brian (Danielle) Burmeister of Ankeny; grandchildren, Adam, Brittany, Derek, Kelsey, Brooke, Olivia, Blake, Kaitlin, Brady, Jack, and Henry; 13 great-grandsons; brothers, Kenny (Wilma), Gary (Marilyn), and Eddie (Anne); a brother-in-law, Dick Carber; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Alice Carber, and brothers, Bill, Wayne, Raymond, and Lyle.
