Deanna Lynn (Johannsen) Schwab

Deanna Lynn (Johannsen) Schwab passed away at Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa, with her sister Sheryl Brommelkamp and son Darren Smiley by her side on June 2, 2023 after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Deanna was born June 28, 1950, at the hospital in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond "Boots" and Wanda (nee Grimm) Johannsen. She attended school at Central Community Schools in Dewitt, Iowa. She furthered her education at the University of Iowa. She treasured her relationships with family and friends from the early part of her life throughout her journey, and appreciated her roots in the hard working farming culture of eastern Iowa.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2023, at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home, Pastor Dianne Prichard officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt.

Deanna moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1983 when she married Mark Schwab. Deanna worked in insurance, ultimately working at Trissel Graham and Toole Insurance in Davenport, becoming an owner with her husband Mark in 1985. She was dedicated to her work and found tremendous pride in her accomplishments, which was well deserved. She was passionate about the winter holidays and her family, making sure to decorate and bake to show her spirit. After retirement, Mark and Deanna spent much of their time and energy traveling the globe and visiting with loved ones across the country. She found great peace in spending time at the beach on Seabrook Island, South Carolina, walking and watching the dolphins in the afternoon before she returned home to watch the nightly news.

Deanna was an avid golfer and spent countless days on the golf course with her family, smiling and taking in the sunshine, often making an improbable long putt and bringing on spontaneous celebration including scoring a hole-in-one on the 8th hole at the East Course in Eagle Ridge (Galena) on 8-18-18. She enjoyed gardening at the family home in Galena, planting tomatoes and rhubarb each spring to share with loved ones.

Deanna was an avid sports fan, cheering for the Hawkeyes and Steelers each week there was a game, and for many years attending Iowa Football and Basketball games with her family.  She was a kind and caring woman who cherished her husband, sons, grandchildren, and extended family with all her heart.

Deanna is survived by her husband, Mark, sons Darren Smiley (Christine) and Joe Schwab (Sophie), grandchildren Brandon, Cassandra, Donovan, Elle, and Jay (due July 2023), seven great-grandchildren (Aiden, Chase, Ahriana, Chance, Connor, Jayla, and Collin) and sister, Sheryl Brommelkamp, sister-in-law Beth Schwab, along with her nieces, nephews, and cousins all whom she dearly loved. Deanna was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ronnie Johannsen, brother-in-law Kenneth Brommelkamp and her in-laws Carl and Shirley Schwab. Please celebrate Deanna's life and all the good memories you shared with her in your own way.

Deanna would like any memorials to go to the American Cancer Society in her name.
