Constance “Connie” (Mrs. Dr. Samuel James) Tuthill, 97, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday, September 22, 2023, at Wheatland Manor, surrounded by her loving family.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2023, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A private family service will follow in the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Vail Cemetery in Parsippany, New Jersey, along with her husband, at a later date.
Constance Huntington Howell was born April 17, 1926, in Glen Rock, New Jersey, to John and Constance (Huntington) Howell. She grew up with her two younger sisters, Joanne and Meredith in Boonton, New Jersey. Connie attended St. John’s in Mountain Lakes, followed by Douglass College and Rutgers University, where she received her BS/MS in genetics.
Connie married Samuel James Tuthill on September 7, 1952, in Boonton, New Jersey. She followed Sam’s career as he pursued his education and work life, which took them to New York, North Dakota, Ohio, and finally Iowa. Connie received two additional master’s degrees and worked at the University of Iowa medical library. She also taught zoology at the University of North Dakota and Muskingum College.
Upon retirement, Connie and Sam moved to Grand Marais, Minnesota, where they enjoyed a home on Devil Track Lake for 25 years. They moved to DeWitt in 2013, to be near family. Sam preceded her in death in 2019.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan C. (Jeff) Gimprich of Guanajuto, Mexico, and sons, James F. (Evelyn Hill) Tuthill of Laramie, Wyoming, and John H. (Michele) Tuthill of DeWitt, Iowa; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; sisters, Joanne Howell and Meredith Lipitz of New York City; and special family friend, Jean Prior Sandrock of Iowa City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Tim Tuthill, and granddaughter, Alison Walatka.
