Bruce Anderson Obituary

Bruce A. Anderson, age 82, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, November 7, 2011.

Bruce was born March 9, 1929, in Clinton, Iowa, to Ben and Beulah (Nelson) Anderson. When he was 11 months old his mother died, and Bruce was raised by his stepmother, Myrtle (Goddard), and father. He graduated from DeWitt High School. On October 25, 1950, Bruce married Maxine Hudson at the United Methodist Church in Low Moor. The couple farmed at rural DeWitt, for many years. In the 1980s in Bruce’s own words, he “paid too much for the farm and started selling the land by the pound.” The family-run business, known as Anderson Sand & Gravel has been in existence to this day. Bruce loved his work and could often be found there from sunup to sundown. In the early years, he invented much of his own equipment, which he took great pride in. Besides working, Bruce enjoyed Sunday drives and dancing with Maxine.

Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Maxine; children, Judy (Rich) Meland of Low Moor, Iowa, Ruth (Bob) Zimmerman of Delmar, Iowa, Dale (Jolene) Anderson, Russell Anderson and Greg (Kris) Anderson all of DeWitt; grandchildren, Carissa, Heath (Alyssa) and Jason (Katie) Schroeder, Tracie Bernauer, Jill, Jared, Julie and Jena Anderson, Bridgett and Brandon Anderson and Colton Anderson; stepgrandchildren, Bobby and Brian Zimmerman; great-grandchildren, Elaina, Landon, Quinn, Lauren, Natalie, Kody and Caden; brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law, Lawrence and Shirley Hudson and Don Reher; nieces and nephews.

Preceding Bruce in death were an infant daughter, Joyce, and his parents.

The family will receive friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 7 p.m. Friday, November 11, 2011. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011, in the funeral home. The Rev. Jeff Wartgow will officiate. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous.
