Al (Leo Alan) Connell 84, of rural Grand Mound, Iowa, died Monday, June 8, 2020, of dementia at Senior Star Memory Care in Davenport.
Al was born December 26, 1935, to Leo and Estella (Welsh) Connell. He graduated from Welton High School in 1954 and attended St. Ambrose College. He served in the Navy and was Quarter Master on the Ice Breaker US Staten Island with duty to Arctic, Antarctic, and back to the Arctic. Al married Marian Burke December 28, 1958, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lost Nation.
Al belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and was a past Grand Knight of the KCs. He was a policeman in DeWitt and later a Clinton County deputy. Farming and gardening were a big part of his life.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years; children Brenda of L'Arche in Clinton, Mart (Cindy) Delmar and Matt (Gaye) Fairview, Texas; grandchildren Shannon (Alec Hall), Steven (Ashley), Cole, Kacie, Bailey, Erica and Nicole; a sister Mary (Phil Senatra) Clackamus, Oregon, brother-in-law Ramon Burke and sister-in-law Karen Steffen; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Wayne and Jerry, and brother-in-law Charles Burke.
Military rites and interment will held be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt.
Memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church in DeWitt and L'Arche in Clinton.
