Winston John Smith

Winston John Smith, 95, of DeWitt, died peacefully on July 28, 2017, at the home of his daughter Jean and Michael McAdams in rural DeWitt.

Winston was born September 14, 1921, to Raymond and Lydia (Lothringer) Smith, on the Smith Century farm in rural Grand Mound, Iowa. He was baptized into Christ on September 23, 1921, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, by his grandfather, The Rev. Frederick Lothringer. Winston was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith on May 31, 1936, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Eschbach. He married Esther Hallgren on April 7, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was a lifelong resident of Clinton County. Winston farmed in the DeWitt and Grand Mound area most of his life, and owned Smith’s Trucking and Shelling, and Smith’s Machine Shop for a time.

He was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, and was a founding member of the Eastern Iowa Threshers Association. He enjoyed going to Mt. Pleasant to the Steam Show and was once awarded Thresher of The Year. In years past he always enjoyed restoring tractors and showing them. He was well known for his love of steam engines. Winston built a 1/3 scale steam engine, threshing machine, plow, and water wagon. He also built and restored many buildings on his farm.

Survivors include children, Janet (Bill) Robinson, DeWitt and Jean (Michael) McAdams, DeWitt; grandchildren Mark (Shelly) Robinson, DeWitt, and Deanna Robinson (Rick Falen), River Forest, IL; step grandchildren Scott McAdams, Danville, IN, Kevin (Susan) McAdams, Mt. Pleasant, SC, Ashley (Matt) Robinson, Pella, Andrew (Robin) Muhs, Madison, WI; great-grandchildren, Crystal (Daniel Munson) Robinson, Grand Mound, Abigail (Fiancé, Zachary Bearden) Robinson, Chicago, IL, Bayley Robinson, Phoenix, AZ; Step-great-grandchildren Megan, Ellie, and Dylan McAdams, all of Danville, IN, Harris and Lucie McAdams, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Zoey, and Ainsley Robinson, Pella; great-great-grandchildren Dylan, Cameron, and Noah, Grand Mound; siblings, Lois Roll, and Frederic (Joan) Smith all of DeWitt; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; a grandson, Spencer Robinson; a brother, Lowell (Velma), and brother-in-law, Ken Roll; and nephews, Dean Smith, Jack Bentley, and David Henry.

Visitation will be at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound on Wednesday, August 2, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound with the Rev. Steven Anderson presiding. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound.
