William James Gockel, 75, of Calamus, Iowa, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on June 17, 2017, at home.

Bill was born June 21, 1941, to Celestine and Theresa (Adams) Gockel in Dubuque. He was a 1959 graduate of Loras Academy in Dubuque. Bill was united in marriage to Charlotte Kremenak on November 30, 1963, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Dubuque. The couple lived in Calamus for the past 25 years.

Bill was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Bill made everyone feel welcome and never knew a stranger. It made him happy to be a part of many lives and help as much as he could. He had a servant’s heart, much like Jesus. Bill’s faith helped him keep a positive outlook and persevere through all circumstances.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 53 years, Charlotte; children, Tim (Kellie) Martin of Bettendorf, Susan (Doug) Martin of Pasadena, California, John Gockel of Orting, Washington, Jennifer (Marty) Brooks of Rapids City, Illinois, Mary Hall of Bettendorf, Christine (Brent) Nelson of Indianola, and “adopted” son, Robert Jarrett of Calamus; grandchildren, Jenna and Julia Martin, Brittany and David Martin, Season Kutsch and Timon Brooks, Christopher Hall, Chad Nelson, and “adopted” grandson, Patrick Shipler-Jarrett; great-granddaughters, Addi and Sadie; siblings, Ruth Hainstock, Dan (Elaine), Dave (Joanne), and Tom Gockel; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Jr., and daughter, Lisa; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Patricia (Bud) Strane.

Visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. and Funeral Mass following at 12:00 noon in the church. Burial will be at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery, LaMotte, Iowa.
