Ruth Porter Obituary

Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Porter, 97 of Low Moor, Iowa, died Monday evening September 24, 2018, at St. Anthony’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Island, Illinois.

She was born November 13, 1920, to the late Lawrence and Inez (Hiese) Dumar. After graduation from High School she attended business college and received a diploma as a certified court reporter excelling in shorthand. She could type faster than most people could talk. Ruth married John Porter on May 21, 1957, in Rockford, Illinois.  The couple farmed and Ruth drove tractor and cooked for all the help.  She was also a caregiver for many years in Maquoketa and Bettendorf.  John passed away in 1977.

Ruth loved bowling and was a member of several leagues. She was a 600 bowler and bowled for 34 years with the Women's International Bowling Congress, winning many awards and several state tournaments. She enjoyed traveling with the bowling teams to many different places. Ruth served twice as Worthy Matron of the Low Moor Eastern Star #519.  She was a leader of the Minnehaha 4-H club, and was a member of Follett’s study club. She enjopying doing word search puzzles, watching the Chicago Cubs, White Sox, and Iowa Hawkeyes on television, and family trips to out-of-town Clinton baseball games. Ruth was also a poet and wrote many poems.

Survivors include her daughter, Flora “Rosie” (Larry Roling) Moon of Davenport; nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald (Phyllis) Dumar; sisters, Donna (Orbin) Johnson, Eleanor (Jerry) Dirksen and Laurene (Bill) Humphries; a special niece, Rosetta (Clarence) Langy.

Visitation will be from 12 noon until 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home, with Pastor Denise Anderberg officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
