Michael Sylvester Skeffington, Jr., was born August 30, 1928, in DeWitt, Iowa, to Michael “Kelly” and Goldie (Michaelsen) Skeffington. Mike was proud of his upbringing in little DeWitt, Iowa, where he helped with farm chores, delivered newspapers, mowed lawns, and worked with the City Street Department and at Capper’s Creamery. Mike graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1947, where he learned to play the piano and participated in school plays.

But, Mike was destined for the big city and enrolled in the organ program at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, where he earned a Liberal Arts Degree. For a time, he tried to earn a living playing the organ, but after serving in the Army during the Korean War, he took night classes to earn a degree in accounting at Loyola University. He worked for brokerage firms in Chicago for 33 years before retiring from Mesirow & Co. In 2005, for health reasons and to be closer to family, Mike moved to Bettendorf, Iowa.

It was at Loyola that Mike met his wife, Rosemary Ruh. They were married November 9, 1957. Rosemary passed away in 1977.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Paul, Jim and Francis “Swede.”

He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
