Mrs. Helen Mae Hofer, 98, of Low Moor, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, November 22, 2017, at the Kahl Home in Davenport where she had been a resident for the past six years.

Mrs. Hofer, the former Helen Mae Howson was born October 2, 1919, to the late Vernon and Fannie (Clement) Howson, on the family farm in Eden Township, Clinton County, Iowa.  She attended Low Moor School and went to Clinton High School where she graduated.  Helen Mae received her RN degree from Jane Lamb Memorial Training for Nurses in 1940.

Helen Mae married Lyle A. Hofer on April 23, 1941, at the Low Moor United Methodist Church.  Together they farmed in the Low Moor area for 32 years until Lyle's death in January 1973.  Helen Mae remained on the farm until 1990, when she moved to DeWitt.

During her nursing career, she was employed by Jane Lamb Memorial and Mercy Hospitals in Clinton.  Helen Mae retired in 1989. She liked to stay busy and volunteered where ever she felt needed.  For many years, she helped prepare and serve the Low Moor Lions Club breakfasts.  Helen Mae helped with and furnished treats for the Low Moor United Methodist Church "Kids Club" for many years.  After moving to DeWitt, she volunteered at West Wing, being known as the "Mail Lady", distributing mail to the residents.

Helen was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church at Low Moor.  She was a wonderful cook and liked to share her goodies with family and friends.  Her pies, brownies, meatloaf, peanut clusters and Ranger and Surprise cookies were her family's favorites.

Surviving are sons, Steve Hofer and Jim (Terri) Hofer of DeWitt; grandchildren, Aaron (Mindy) Hofer of Cottonwood, Minnesota, Tiffany (Greg) Mercuri of Victoria, Minnesota and Eric (Erin) Hofer of Johnston, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Erin, Michael and Hunter; half-sisters, Jean Doescher of DeWitt and Janice (Tom) Wiebenga of Clinton; a sister-in-law, Elaine Hofer of DeWitt; several nieces and nephews.
