Mrs. Evelyn D. Skeffington, 98, of DeWitt, Iowa, died late Thursday afternoon, September 7, 2017, at Grand Haven Assisted Living, Eldridge.

Mrs. Skeffington, the former Evelyn Darlene Brandenburg was born to William J. and Mabel (Allen) Brandenburg April 11, 1919, and raised by her grandparents, Anna and Charles Kanneberg.  She was a graduate of DeWitt High School-Class of 1937.  As a girl, she enjoyed playing the piano and going to dances.  After graduation, Evelyn was employed as a secretary at the Pascal Law Office.  Evelyn married Paul Skeffington June 19, 1939 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt.

She was a lifelong DeWitt resident, except for a two-year period when she and her husband and first two children lived in Clinton.  Evelyn was a support and partner in the various grocery and meat markets she and Paul owned.  At the time of Paul’s death in 1988 they were co-owners with Frances and Marcelene Skeffington of Skeffington’s Jack & Jill.

Evelyn was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt.

Surviving are her children, Ramona (Bob) Lee of DeWitt, Bonnie (Laverne) Burken of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Margie (Don) Fuglsang of DeWitt and Bob (Kathy) Skeffington of Davenport; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and grandparents; half-brothers, Lloyd and Lynell Baker and a special cousin, Elaine Kanneberg Rowland who was also raised by their grandparents.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2017.  A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Lee, Jeff Fuglsang, Jason Fuglsang, Kelly Skeffington, Wes Skeffington and Matt Skeffington.
