Mrs. Eleanor Elizabeth Vetter, 97, of Calamus, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, January 24, 2018, at Wheatland Manor.
Mrs. Vetter, the former Eleanor Elizabeth Higgins, was born January 13, 1921, in rural Zwingle, Iowa, the daughter of Alpheus “Alf” and Edna (Lenhart) Higgins. After graduating from Calamus Consolidated High School she received her teaching certificate, and later a BA from Marycrest College in Davenport. Eleanor married Ellis Vetter on June 25, 1944, in Wheatland. He preceded her in death on June 26, 1990. Eleanor taught in Clinton County schools until retirement.
Eleanor was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, the Ladies Aid Society, the Friday Study Club, and various other clubs and organizations. She enjoyed reading, baking, keeping house, fishing, and dancing on Saturday nights.
She is survived by her sons, Tom (Margaret) of Grand Mound, Todd (Rena) of Lost Nation, Bill (Cris) of DeWitt; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Schwartz; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Ellis, she was preceded in death by a brother Burton (Ramona) Higgins, and a brother-in-law, Ray Schwartz, and a nephew.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2018, in the church with the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Buena Vista Cemetery, rural Calamus.
Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Paul B. Sharar Foundation at Clinton Community College.
